Inside my Backpack: How to Pack for Safari

If you’re going on Safari you are about to have the best time of your life! My fiancée and I went to Botswana and Zimbabwe in November of 2015 on a small group camping tour.

At the time we’d decided to go on a whim and had few supplies sitting around the apartment, so it was a little frantic trying to get packed right.

This was my shopping list:

  • 35L Backpack w/ waterproof covering – I’m petite so I bought a children’s size and it fit perfectly

  • Headlamp

  • First Aid Kit

  • Travel towels

  • High-intensity bug spray

  • High-intensity sunscreen

  • Breathable clothing (I opted for a lot of cheap compression tees and pants)

  • Thick socks (mine were wool)

  • Binoculars

  • Rain Jacket

  • Cargo pants (I prefer pants that can tear away into shorts)

  • Travel pillow

Additional Items:

  • Hair ties & headbands

  • Hat

  • Sunglasses

  • Travel toothbrush & toothpaste

  • Travel soap

  • Undergarments

  • T-shirts & thin long sleeves (just a few will do – most tours include laundry service & free days)

  • Tennis shoes

  • Hiking Boots (broken in!)

  • Lots of books (fair amount of driving & flying involved)

  • Chargers

  • Bathing Suit

  • Journal & pen

  • Optional – flip-flops

& don’t forget!

  • Malaria pills & any other medications

  • Passport

  • High quality camera (if you don’t have one borrow!)

  • Cash for exchange

  • Copies of tickets & reservations

  • Leave room for souvenirs
